Art, Ecology and Place in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve with Alejandro Durán
April 25 - May 2, 2026
This seven-day immersive retreat takes place within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, where Alejandro Durán’s Washed Up project has been developed over the past sixteen years.
Centered on the creative act, the retreat invites participants to engage directly with the landscape through making, observation, and reflection. Working with materials found on site—including marine debris carried by ocean currents—participants will create temporary, site-responsive installations in dialogue with the surrounding environment.
Through guided sessions, individual exploration, and group conversation, the program explores how art can reveal connections between place, ecology, and global systems of production and consumption.
The retreat unfolds through a rhythm of daily fieldwork, creative practice, and shared reflection. Participants will experiment with form, color, and composition in an open-ended process that emphasizes curiosity, attention, and responsiveness to the environment.
As part of the experience, participants will take part in a guided boat excursion through the reserve’s lagoons and waterways, offering a broader view of the ecosystems, birdlife, and marine life that shape this unique landscape.
The experience culminates in a series of temporary installations and a collective documentation of the work within the landscape.

Alejandro Durán
Alejandro is a Mexican American multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and filmmaker whose work explores ecology, consumption, and global systems through long-term, place-based practice. He is the founder of Washed Up, a project he has developed for over fifteen years in Sian Ka’an, a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Working with plastic debris collected from the shoreline, Durán creates site-responsive installations that transform found materials into visually striking compositions embedded within the landscape. His work reveals the global circulation of waste and its impact on even the most remote environments, reframing pollution as both evidence and material.
Durán’s practice bridges art, documentary, and education. He has led workshops and taught at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the International Center of Photography (ICP), and is currently developing a series of field-based programs that connect artistic practice with ecological awareness across museum, community, and academic contexts.
His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in books, magazines, and media platforms worldwide.
Through Washed Up and related initiatives, Durán continues to develop new forms of environmental storytelling that connect local experience with global realities.
